LASIK & Wavefront Custom LASIK
Like a fingerprint or a snowflake, each person's eye
is unique. With Wavefront Lasik it is now possible
to treat each individual eye for its unique imperfections,
enabling many patients to acheive a quality of vision
better than 20/20. Wavefront "Custom" LASIK technology allows Dr. Scimeca
to create a pre-operative 3D detailed map, or "fingerprint" of your entire optical system that measures imperfections
in your vision with 25 times more accuracy than standard
measurements for glasses and contacts.
The measurements by Custom LASIK may reduce the risk of nighttime halos and glare, and offers patients a chance to see 20/20 or better.
Before
Wavefront technology, many imperfections in your vision could
not be measured. With Wavefront, Dr. Scimeca can
treat your vision with more depth and precision than
has ever been possible. This is an amazing breakthrough
- it means that in many cases, after LASIK, patients
will see better than they ever could before with glasses
or contacts.
LASIK Education
The LASIK procedure was first performed in North America in 1993. It can correct most degrees of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. During the procedure, a cornal flap is created and a laser is used to reshape the corneal tissue, using exact pre-operative measurements of your eyes. Recovery for both LASIK and Wavefront Custom LASIK is relativley quick and comfortable.
Refractive eye procedures, like LASIK, treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. They work in the same way as glasses or contact lenses by altering the eye so that light focuses correctly on the retina.
- Normal eye - Light focusus directly on the retina, the back of the eye.

Vision correction can typically treat:
- Myopia (Nearsightedness) -If light is focused too far forward in the eye, the refractive error is referred to as myopia, or nearsightedness. You can see 'near' but not far.

- Hyperopia (Farsightedness) - If light is focused too far back in the eye, it is referred to as hyperopia, or farsightedness. You can see 'far' but not near.

- Astigmatism - Astigmatism can be thought of as the presence of light being focused at two different points. It may exist by itself or in addition to myopia or hyperopia.
Presbyopia - (the need for reading glasses) can exist by itself or along with myopia, hyperopia, and/or astigmatism. Its onset typically occurs between 40 and 45 years of age. Prior to this age, the lens system of th eye changes shape in order to keep objects in focus as they move closer to the eye. After the onset of presbyopia, the lens system lacks sufficient elasticity and/or space to maintain focus when objects are within arm's length. |
Clear Lens Extraction -In a clear lens extraction, or also called refractive lens exchange, your eye's natural lens is replaced with an artificial one to achieve sharper focus. The clear lens extraction is an elective procedure, in which insurances will not cover.
For extreme farsightedness (hyperopia) higher than +6.00 diopters, LASIK is generally not recommended, making refractive lens exchange a possible option. If a traditional intraocular lens is used, distance vision can be corrected, but reading glasses would be needed. If an accommodating or multifocal intraocular lens is used, such as the ones listed below, reading glasses may be needed infrequently. |
