Visian ICL™

Visian ICL™, also known as implantable collamer lens, is a type of refractive procedure to help correct nearsightedness. For years, the only method that didn’t involve glasses or contacts was corrective laser eye surgery. The Visian ICL™ is an implantable contact lens that works with the eye to correct vision.

The Visian ICL™ Procedure

The implantation procedure for the Visian ICL™ involves a procedure similar to that of cataract surgery. The main difference is that, unlike cataract surgery, the Visian ICL™ procedure does not require the removal of the eye’s crystalline lens. And unlike the LASIK or PRK refractive procedures, the Visian ICL™ procedure does not involve the removal of sensitive eye tissue.

The Visian ICL™ procedure is a short 15 minute outpatient procedure where an implantable contact lens is surgically inserted into the eye where it provides excellent quality of vision for a wide range of correction needs.

Good Candidates for the Visian ICL

If you are between the ages of 21 and 45, nearsighted, and have had stable vision for a year, you are an excellent candidate for the Visian ICL™. The Visian ICL™ is made to help correct patients with low myopia to high myopia. Not only is the Visian ICL™ good for candidates with high myopia, but it may be the perfect option for people who are suffering with severe dry eyes or have thin corneas.

The first step in determining if you are a candidate would be to schedule a consultation with our Visian ICL™ surgeon, Dr. Gregory Scimeca. The consultation would include a comprehensive eye examination, followed by a discussion of various refractive surgery options including the implantation of a lens like the Visian ICL™, and/or laser refractive surgery. Based on your correction needs, eye health, medical history, and desired outcome for refractive surgery, Dr. Scimeca will determine if you are a good candidate for the Visian ICL™.

Visian ICL Recovery

The recovery time for the Visian ICL™ is very quick and comfortable, and may be as little as a day, due to the very small size of the incision required. The incision needed to implant the foldable Visian ICL™ is tiny and located on the far edge of the cornea, where there is little danger of it interfering with vision. Once the lens is implanted, sutures are typically not needed to close the incision, further simplifying the procedure.
